Weon Rhee

Weon Rhee (본명 이종원)은 서울을 기반으로 기능적 예술을 만드는 작가이자 디자이너다. 홍익대학교에서 가구디자인 석사를 마친 뒤 시각과 촉각에 대한 높은 감수성을 바탕으로 직접 만지고 실험하는 작업 방식을 발전시켰다. 그의 예명은 본명 ‘원’과 ‘이’의 옛 표기에서 가져온 것으로, 과거의 문화·역사·사회적 풍경에서 동시대의 감각을 발견하려는 태도를 담는다. 건축 폐목재를 비롯한 새로운 재료와 한국의 오래된 구조적 기억을 결합해 개인적 감각과 사회적 서사를 연결하는 가구와 오브제를 만든다.

Weon Rhee (born Jong won Lee) is a Seoul-based artist and designer specialising in functional art. After completing a master’s degree in furniture design at Hongik University, he developed a tactile, exploratory practice grounded in direct engagement with materials. His artist name adapts older spellings of ‘won’ and ‘lee’, signalling an identity that looks to cultural, historical and social landscapes from Korea’s past. By combining sensory experimentation, architectural memory and materials including reclaimed construction wood, Rhee creates functional objects that connect the personal with the social.
