Se Oh

세 오는 서울과 로스앤젤레스를 기반으로 활동하는 한국계 미국인 작가다. 생후 9개월에 한국에서 미국 남부로 입양된 개인적 경험을 바탕으로 정체성, 경계적 존재, 회복력과 보살핌의 문제를 도자, 회화와 소프트 스컬프처로 풀어낸다. 백자, 한지, 비단처럼 연약함과 견고함이 공존하는 재료를 사용하며, 전통 한국 도자의 형태와 자연의 생명력에서 영감을 얻는다. 미국의 흙과 한국의 청자 유약, 식물처럼 겹쳐지는 유기적 형상을 통해 두 문화 사이에서 형성된 복합적 자아를 드러낸다.

Se Oh is a Korean-American artist based between Seoul and Los Angeles. Adopted from South Korea at nine months old and raised in the American Deep South, they draw on personal history to explore identity, liminality, resilience and nurturance through ceramics, painting and soft sculpture. Oh works with materials such as porcelain, hanji and silk, whose fragility and durability coexist, and looks to traditional Korean ceramic forms and the resilience of plant life. The meeting of American clay, Korean celadon glazes and layered organic forms becomes a language for a self shaped between cultures.
