Hyoung Sul Kim

김형술은 콘크리트와 아크릴 같은 산업 재료를 활용해 자연과 인공, 자아와 환경 사이의 흐릿한 경계를 조형적으로 탐구하는 예술가다. 그에게 조형이란 단단한 형태를 만드는 것이 아니라, 사라지고 쌓이고 깎인 흔적 자체를 시각화하는 일이다. 반복적인 긁기, 해체, 조각, 재조합의 행위를 통해 물질이 감당해낸 시간과 감각의 흔적을 끌어낸다. 그의 작업은 캔버스나 오브제를 태초의 지형으로 상정하고, 그 위에 인공적인 풍화작용을 가해 새로운 지형을 만들어내는 과정이다. 마르지 않은 콘크리트에 먹을 섞어 바르고, 굳은 후 표면을 깎고 다시 먹을 입히는 과정을 반복해 공간감을 부여한다. 표면을 조작하는 속도, 방향, 깊이의 차이에서 촉각적인 감각이 드러나며, 이는 촉감을 시각화 하려는 시도다. 김형술은 ‘랩크리트(LAB.CRETE)’라는 이름 아래, 단순한 재료 실험을 넘어 재료 자체가 사회적·철학적 질문을 품을 수 있는 조형 언어가 될 수 있음을 제시해왔다. 그의 작업은 전시장에서 관객과 물리적 거리를 두기보다는, 조용하고 깊은 내면적 교감을 요청한다.

Hyoung Sul Kim is an artist who uses industrial materials such as concrete and acrylic to explore, through form, the blurred boundaries between nature and the artificial, and between the self and its environment. For Kim, making form is not about creating a solid shape, but about visualising the traces of what has disappeared, accumulated and been carved away. Through repeated acts of scratching, dismantling, carving and recombining, he draws out the traces of time and sensation that the material has endured. His practice begins by treating the canvas or object as a primordial terrain, upon which he applies artificial processes of weathering to create a new topography. He mixes ink into wet concrete and applies it, then, once it has hardened, repeatedly carves back the surface and reapplies ink to create a sense of spatial depth. Tactile sensations emerge through variations in the speed, direction and depth with which he manipulates the surface—an attempt to make touch visible. Working under the name LAB.CRETE, Kim has moved beyond straightforward material experimentation to propose that material itself can become a formal language capable of carrying social and philosophical questions. Rather than maintaining a physical distance between artwork and viewer in the exhibition space, his work invites a quiet and profound inward communion.
