Dongwook Choi

최동욱은 현실과 가상, 예술과 실용, 물질과 비물질의 경계에 대한 호기심을 바탕으로 디지털 환경에서 생성된 조형 언어가 물리적 사물로 전환되는 과정에 집중하는 디자이너다. 3D 컴퓨터 모델링을 완성 이미지를 예측하는 도구가 아니라 형태를 시험하고 변주하는 사고의 장으로 활용하며, 제작 과정에서 발생하는 재료의 한계와 실수, 우연성까지 조형을 재조정하는 중요한 기준으로 받아들인다. 그에게 재료는 단순한 외피가 아니라 작업의 개념을 드러내는 핵심 요소로, 디지털에서 균질했던 표면에 무게와 시간의 흔적, 현실의 감각을 부여한다. 특정 용도에 종속되기보다 시각적·물리적 존재감을 지닌 형태로서, 공간에 새로운 심상을 불어넣는 ‘제안적인’ 역할을 하는 작업을 지향한다.

Dongwook Choi works from a curiosity about the boundaries between reality and the virtual, art and utility, and the material and immaterial, focusing on how visual languages generated in digital space become physical objects. He uses 3D computer modelling not to predict a finished image but as a space for testing and varying form, accepting material limits, mistakes and chance events in fabrication as essential criteria for reshaping a design. Material is not an outer skin but a core conceptual element: it gives digitally uniform surfaces weight, traces of time and a sense of physical reality. Rather than binding his objects to a single utility, Choi aims for forms with a clear visual and physical presence that play a suggestive role and bring new imagery into space.
